What is GSM in print terms?

Unfortunately we have to use a print term here, and that’s GSM. GSM stands for ‘Grams per Square Metre’, It’s a measurement that people in the design and print world use instead of saying Thin and Think paper quality. Think of everything from tracing paper to card. The number represents how much a square metre of the paper or card you’re using would weigh (in grams, not just the one piece of paper ). Not just is the paper thicker in a higher number stock, but would be made of better quality paper.

How does it work in real life? So instead of mapping out a square metre size on the dining room table and weighing the result, here’s a handy list of some of the most common paperweights.

35gsm to 55gsm: This is very thin paper indeed. Think of most newspapers for example.

80gsm to 100gsm: This is the weight of most household printer paper in reams of 500. You will see bleeding through the paper if you heavily print on both sides.

120gsm to 140gsm: Now were getting to the area of professional printing. Letterheads, flyers etc. The paper with this GSM is sturdy enough to withstand a bit of wear and tear, either by posting or handing out to people.

130 to 170 GSM – A good quality promotional poster. Something that you’d expect to last a couple of months in most conditions.

180 to 250 GSM – Like a mid-market magazine cover.

210gsm to 300gsm: Moving onto premium stock now. This paper stock range is approaching card but will still have a bit of a bend. Think of the high end magazine covers.

350gsm to 400gsm: This GSM is essentially card. It will stand up under its own weight and is most commonly associated with business cards, thick greeting cards and wedding invitations.
